Listed Breeders
Looking after the welfare of a breed that is
becoming popular can be very difficult. As a breed becomes more popular
less reputable breeders ("puppy factories") start producing litters for quantity, rather
than quality. Some dogs in other breeds have been bred in appalling
conditions. Dogs that are bred without regard to lineage have a much
higher risk of carrying genetic disorders that can lead to disability
or premature death, causing pain and anguish to both dog and owner. In
order to provide a level of confidence in the quality of dogs being
bred, the Society is seeking to establish a list of breeders that are
members of the Society, have agreed to abide by the Society's Breeding
Protocols, and in the view of the Society have maintained their
reputation.
Establishing a list of breeders requires the
agreement of Breeding Protocols and the establishment of processes
within the Society for the review of a breeders reputation. These
processes must be fair and allow for consideration of complaints and
appeals. Care must be taken to avoid bias, or the perception of bias.
The Society Committee is currently investigating appropriate governance
and processes to enable an effective list of breeders to be created.
Breeding Protocol
The society has drafted a Health Protocol for testing of significant diseases.
This protocol includes regular testing of breeding stock and exclusions from breeding for animals that have been diagnosed with a significant disease.
